HealthVault - Ending Direct Messaging

11/6/2018

Looks like the HealthVault is off the Personal Health Information Exchange table for me...

1Up Health - Personal Health Record - Encouraging

10/1/2018

Like that it connects via API to the leading EHRs, and extracts the data into discrete elements.

Missing a few components, but it'll replace HealthVault for me.

Heart Rate Variability Monitor

8/3/2018

Picture
Picture
Trying out the new Kickstarter CorSense Heart Rate Variability device. (Like a 5-Lead ECG/EKG).

Better than my basic heart rate (HR) monitor (Apple watch)  it counts the number of heartbeats per minute, looking at the exact changes in time between successive heartbeats.

So far, it's been pretty easy to incorporate into my daily routine.

But don't like that you have to pay to view the information online!

Blockchain - Closer to the Personal Health Information Exchange

5/2/2018

Picture

Enjoyed both books.  Helped me frame the new open, borderless, decentralized, permissionless world. (blockchain / bitcoin)

Looking forward to seeing the impact on healthcareIT...

And it really seems like the answer to Eric Topol's challenge in The Patient Will See You Now.  (Your. Medical. Data.)

Less Medicine, More Health

1/2/2018

Picture
Really underscores the need for people to be more responsible for their health.

Personally, it's exciting to see all the new tech for better self-monitoring, so care providers can focus on what they do best, manage chronic and other more complicated conditions.

Very Encouraged about the Apple Watch Direction...

9/19/2017

Picture
Encouraged - Apple is teaming up with Stanford for a major heart study to test whether Apple Watch's heart-rate sensor can detect cardiac arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms.

Becoming an Urban Monk

1/15/2017

Picture
Enjoyed the Urban Monk.  Focuses on Energy, Sleep, Lifestyle, Weight, Self Image, Nature, Being Lonely and Living Live with a Purpose.

It highlights the fact that 80% of our healthcare costs come from chronic lifestyle disease.   And these are preventable!

One scary stat:  Sugar is 10 times more addictive than cocaine,  Causing problems with our blood sugar (diabetes), lowers our immune system, triggers us to store more fat, and feeds the bad bacteria in our gut.

Tech forces are relevant to Healthcare IT

12/5/2016

Picture
Enjoyed the book.  In summary, the book outlines 12 Tech Forces (Defined as verbs). that will shape our future.

These verbs do seem pertinent to healthcare, like Cognifying (Adding AI), Flowing, Screening, Accessing, Sharing, Interacting, Tracking, Questioning.

And the first and last ones, Becoming and Beginning, are the reasons why healthcare tech is so interesting to me...

Blockchain in Healthcare IT

11/29/2016

Picture
Enjoyed The Business of Blockchain by William Mougayar.

There are two keys for me within the healthcare business blockchain.   Data trust, data control and data sharing.

Gives me great hope that one day I might actually be able to create, store and share my personal health information, without having to enter any data manually.

And really like the concept of crytotech and cryptocurrency.

Glucose Monitor - Measuring My bG

9/5/2016

Picture
Having fun with my new glucose monitor.  Picked the Accu-Chek Aviva.  Auto-syncs to my iPhone.  Like the app on the phone.  Uploads to Apple Health.

Even though I get my labs done 3/4 times a year, it's been interesting to see how different foods have an impact, or don't have an impact, on my glucose reading.

With 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, I'm not sure why these devices are not suggested to anyone with their fasting bG close to 100mg/dl.

Hospital rooms moving to the home?

6/29/2016

Picture
The Patient Will See You Now:  The Future of Medicine Is In Your Hand.  Interesting concept:  ...,the hospital of the future will be the bedroom.

Per the book;
  • Biosensors will record continuous vital signs and other relevant metrics.
  • IOT devices and smartphone add-appters would enable communication and examinations.
  • Smart pillboxes and other tools would monitor treatment adherence.
  • Emergency response can call an ambulance.
  • Mattress sensors, motion sensors and other sensors to monitor everyday activities.

Will be interesting to see how quickly this becomes a reality.

Love/Hate relationship - Yunmai scale

4/29/2016

Picture
Like the Yunmai scale.  The data integrates via Bluetooth with the iPhone, pulling discrete data into the Apple Health app.

Have a love/relationship with the scale, though. Love the product & good integration, but not happy with my results...  ;-)

Blood pressure self tracking - Success!

3/14/2016

Picture
Like the Withings BP cuff.  While I have to hard-connect the device to my iPhone, it does send discrete data into the Apple Health app.

Great to trend my results.  Been helpful to get me focused.  And it's helpful to compare the information to other data, like the my iWatch fitness tracker.

On another note - Guess I need to run more & cut back on the salt...

Update - Read How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Greger.  Through diet, I've been able to get my BP under control!   It's a must read for any condition.

Theranos - A little disappointed...

1/23/2016

Picture
Theranos - Thumbs down.

Likes - Clear pricing, clean offices, nice staff.

Dislikes - No discrete data. (PDF files) Can't trend labs.  No XML option.

Disappointed that new tech lab Theranos provides dated tech options.  Not helpful...

EKG - Alivcor

12/28/2015

Picture
While it's not a complete EKG, it will identify AFIB.  That's a start!

Self-Monitoring device market - Moving in the right direction!

6/30/2015

Picture
Encouraged with my Apple watch.  While miles walked, sleep, heart rate are helpful, I’m looking forward to these devices to expand their capability, enabling me to track more physiological variables, and tying them to my health records.

And, unfortunately, my record is still fragmented, and it’s difficult to make sense of the impact of the different chunks of information!

Excited this market is growing - Global self-monitoring health technologies market – moved from $1.1b in ‘13 to $3.2b in ’14.  (BCC Research)  And it’s expected to grow to $18.8b in ‘19.  This should
drive more innovation and more data to play with!

ResearchKit.  Excited for healthcare research.

2/27/2015

Picture
Excited to see Apple leveraging their consumer footprint to help medical researchers find and engage people in clinical studies, to help them make life-changing discoveries that benefit us all.

And while I recognize it's self serving for Apple to provide ResearchKit in an open source software framework, it seems like this approach will make it easy for researchers and developers to create apps, revolutionize medical studies and transform medicine.

athenahealth + Razor Insights

1/20/2015

Picture
With the acquisition of Razor Insights, it seems like athenahealth will help HealthcareIT cross the chasm and fully embrace cloud-based services for a healthcare enterprise.

Reasons why this combination is encouraging:
o Finally a single vendor cloud-based solution for the hospital and practice market.
o athenahealth has FHIR by supporting the ArgonautProject.
o RazorInsights targets the price sensitive CAH market.
o Jonathon Bush's passion to change the healthcare industry*.

Will be interesting to see if athenahealth can overcome the integration issues that have plagued other vendors, like Allscripts and McKesson (prior to the Horizon platform), etc.

*Based on his book Where does it hurt?

Hello Doctor + Human API

12/17/2014

Picture
Tried out Hello Doctor.  Nice user interface.  Like that it integrates data from my provider and has an option to take a picture and add notes.  Uses the impressive integration healthcare API vendor HumanAPI.

It's not my personal health exchange,  but it's moving in the right direction.

Microsoft finally jumps in...

11/5/2014

Picture
The health platform market is getting more interesting.  Microsoft launches a fitness-focused smart watch, Microsoft Band and their health tracking platform, Microsoft Health.  Will be interesting to see how this works with HealthVault.

Fitbit and Apple - DisIntegration

10/1/2014

Picture
Disappointed that Fitbit and Apple's HealthKit are not planning to link between the two. While I recognize Fitbit is the wearable leader, and maybe there is a threat from the Apple wrist device, the consumer is left to integrate the data.  Will need to look into Fitbit options...

Polo Bio Sensing Fiber (Smart Shirt)

9/5/2014

Picture
Polo Tech Shirt - Looking forward to wearable bio sensing fiber clothing.   What's not clear is how the biometric data will be made available to aggregate with my personal health information exchange.

Direct Test - HealthVault vs Quest

8/23/2014

Picture
Did a test of my HealthVault and Quest Direct email addresses.  Used my Direct Trust account.  HealthVault was able to send/receive from the Health Trust account.  Quest failed both ways.  HealthVault wins.

Picture

Listen to music and track my health at the same time?

8/19/2014

Picture
BioSport In-Ear Headphones - Built-in optical sensor for continuous heart rate monitoring and integration with RunKeeper to supplement heart rate tracking with pace, distance, elevation, and calorie tracking metrics.  I'll be able to see when I'm relaxed and when I'm working hard.  (Not that I can't figure that out myself...)

Health-tracking quantified self apps & devices play loose with data

8/1/2014

Picture
Moving  towards more wearable / quantified self apps, my plan is to create an mHealth only password strategy.

The reason:   Symantec's study of available devices and apps.  Some apps - transmitted sensitive data like username and passwords in clear text; used very low level and easily crackable types of security; exposed other personal information like email addresses.
